The World Boxing Council has honoured Ghana’s Azumah Nelson at it’s convention at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas.
The first WBC Convention since the passing of Jose Sulaiman,founder of the premier sanctioning body,brought together legendary names like Jeff Fenech,Julio Cesar Chavez,Greg Haugen,promoter Don King and a host of other names.
Azumah,already enshrined in the international Hall of Fame was honored as the greatest super featherweight in the history of the WBC for his achievements during his close to two decades boxing career.
Andre Reabinski was awarded Man of the Year; Michelle Patterson is Woman of the Year and the award for the best Boxing Commissioner was won by by Ken Morrita of Japan.
Guinness Records attended to recognize these achievements:
Legendary promoter Don King and iconic fighter Julio Cesar Chavez received the award record for the February 20th 1993 mega clash in the Azteca Stadium in Mexico. A crowd of 132,274 saw Julio overwhelm Greg Haugen in five tempestuous rounds. Representing the TV network that broadcasted the historical card, Televisa. Former Champions Ricardo López and Jorge “Travieso” Arce, are now skilled television analysts.
Don Jose Suliamn was honored as sports international leader with the most time at the helm.
