Cape Verde’s Women’s National Basketball Team has qualified to compete at the 2021 FIBA Women’s African Basketball Championship (AfroBasket).
The Islanders booked its spot at the continental showpiece at the expense of Guinea; Cape Verde beat its fellow West African nation 68-59 to progress.
The team lost 64-65 to Guinea in the first leg held in Conakry but the nine point win in the return leg was enough to give Cape Verde a 132-124 aggregate lead to move to the main competition.
This year’s Women’s AfroBasket is due to be held in Yaounde, Cameroon from September 17 to September 26 and Cape Verde is the first country to qualify to the tournament.
Defending Champions Nigeria has automatically qualified to compete in the tournament; Nigeria will play in the Tokyo Olympics prior to competing at the AfroBasket.
Cape Verde Captain Jade Leitao said to FIBA, “It’s celebration all the way for us. Playing against Guinea is never been easy especially on their home court”.
This is set to be Cape Verde’s fifth appearance at the AfroBasket.
