The Achimota Golf Club and Club Nineteen on Wednesday launched the 2021 Accra Open Golf Tournament in Accra with the announcement of a GH₵ 100,000 prize for professional golfers.
Expected to tee-off November 17-21, 2021, at the world-class Achimota Golf Course, a total of 70 professional golfers from across the African continent are expected to slug it out over the final four days for a share of the purse which organisers hope to increase before the start of play.
The tournament dubbed ‘Road to Recovery’ will also involve contests in four amateur categories. The categories include the Men Group A for players with handicaps 12 and below; the Men Support Group for players with handicaps between 13 and 18; the Ladies, for players with 20 and below and the Ladies Support Group for players with handicaps between 21 and 30.
Addressing the launch, the Captain of the Achimota Golf Club, Mr Kwesi Amoafo-Yeboah said the organisers had pulled all the stops to ensure the successful return of the tournament after a close to five-year lull.
A member of the Organising Committee of the tournament, René Gameli Kwame said the organisers were expecting about 70 professional golfers from across the African continent to participate in the contest.
He said unlike other local tournaments which require golfers to return from the course before all the results could be collated, there would be a live collation of scores through real-time video coverage.
He said registration of interested golfers which was ongoing online at – www.accraopen.com – requires golfers to pay their registration fees upfront after completing the process.
The deadline for payment of the registration fee is 12 midnight on November 10, 2021.
Mr Kwame added that there will also be prizes for the winners in all the categories on the competition.
Key sponsors for this year’s tournament include Martell, Labadi Beach Hotel, Jaguar, Landrover, Obsidian Archernar and Total Ghana.
