The President of the Fencing Association of Ghana Mr. Mohammed Mahadi together with his visiting Fencing Athlete based in the UK Kelsey Woname Victoria Afriyie and family paid a courtesy call on His Excellency the vice President of Ghana Dr. Mahamud Bawumia at the flag staff house on Monday.
The Fencing President took the opportunity to call for support for its activities ahead of the 2022/2023 African Games to be hosted in Ghana.
Mr. Mahadi briefed the vice President on the achievements of the Association and how they are preparing for the upcoming 4th Africa Cadet in Nigeria and the UAE World Junior Championships
The President,on behalf of the Ghana Fencing Association and Africa Fencing, presented an African Plaque ( Ghandour Wisa-Omy TV Achievers Award) given to the UK based fencer Kelsey Woname Victoria Afriyie for her exploits in the Sport to the vice President.
Dr. Bawumia was highly elated with the achievements of Kelsey and happily pledged his support for the Sport in 2022 and beyond.
Kelsey appealed to the Government to support her colleagues in Ghana to join her in the forthcoming Championships since the target is to grab a Gold medal for the country.
Kelsey has been an active fencer for the Association for the past four years and is ranked 60th in the individual category.
At age 17, Kelsey has already established a household name for herself in the sport by participating in the Cadet Juniors in Nigeria,2018, Africa Championship,Algeria in 2019, African Championship, Ghana in 2019 and the Cadet Juniors World Championships,Poland in 2018.
Kelsey is a speciality in the individual and Team Sabre weapon.
With the upcoming Commonwealth Games in her very doorstep the witty UK based Ghanaian is already targeting a Gold medal for the country.
Ghana has a respectable placement of 36th in the General world ranking with the female foil team sitting on the 30th position in the Sabre weapon category in the world.
