It was originally a challenge thrown to Kotoko fans to generally contribute financially in the face of spectating constraints amidst the Covid-19 scourge. The goal of the initiative hasn’t changed. What’s fascinating however, is the emerging trend of supporters congregating in virtual groups to stimulatingly undo each other in the challenge.
The Virtual Seat Challenge was initiated by the Nana Yaw Amponsah (NYA)-led management to essentially make up for the losses the club was making as stadium attendance, besides dropping significantly, was brutally slapped with the Covid-19 25 percent-seating capacity restriction. A laudable idea by the Management, a recent publication vindicates the view that the challenge has been accepted by fans.
Management thought outside the box. Pro-Kotoko WhatsApp groups have since “seized” the initiative. I don’t think Management anticipated that but whatever their expectation was, they’ve tendered this initiative like a baby – giving this baby nutritious milk in the form of updates on payments to the club’s mobile money account.
Fans who can’t make it to the stadium pay any amount to the mobile money account. At my last check, 31 WhatsApp groups have vigorously been paying. Their payments dwarf contributions made directly to the club. This is where my fascination grows. The virtual groups weren’t setup by Management. They were created by the supporters.
So, theirs have been to whip up enthusiasm in the initiative utilising the access social networking platforms like WhatsApp give. More than GH₵50,000 was raised after the last home game. In nine weeks, over GH₵170,000 has been realised. Kotoko fans love their club but it’s not just their unwavering loyalty that’s driving this fundraising.
Transparency, openness, accountability – a vision to send Kotoko to a more desirable destination are the pillars on which this initiative is thriving. Supporters may not have roundly seen Management’s vision but they’ve largely accepted Management’s message to do their part as the club is put on a better pedestal. That’s positive.
Consistent wins by the team definitely energise fans to give more but even if the Porcupines don’t win, we must still come around the team to provide the fuel for the virtual seat vehicle to move. I dislike some Akan proverbs; they’re are innately corrupt but if there’s any wisdom in the adage that, we push the one who climbs a good tree, then fans must push the NYA-led Management to do more.
