Ryan Garcia’s new trainer, good old Joe Goosen once helped Emmanuel Tagoe make weight when the Ghanaian pugilist was Stateside for his US debut against Gerardo Robles in 2013.
In what was a light-hearted banter, Tagoe referred to Goosen as ‘My Daddy.’ He further narrated to his current trainer, Jevier Centeno of the SweatBox Gym how Goosen assisted him almost a decade ago.
As fate would have it, their paths have crossed again but this time around not on friendly terms as Goosen has been named as new trainer of Ryan Garcia just weeks to his bout against Tagoe at the Alamodome.
Garcia ( 21-0-18 KOs) who last fought in January 2021, knocking out Olympic gold medallist, Luke Campbell in seven rounds, had also split with longtime trainer Eddy Reynoso, also trainer of boxing luminary, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in a somewhat ugly split. Garcia , 5ft10 , born on August 8, 1998, had cited Reynoso’s unavailability as his reason for the switch.
He makes a comeback against Tagoe (32-1, 15KOs) on a Golden Boy card. Garcia plans to use this fight as a dust up. But in direct contrast, the maverick tough talking Ghanaian believes the bout could potentially announce him to the world and he’s therefore coming in, all guns blazing.
Tagoe beat Mason Menard by majority decision in 2020.
But the plot keeps getting thicker by the day with the revelation of Game Boy’s past acquaintance with Joe Goosen. Whether this would play to Tagoe’s advantage or amount to his nemesis, only time would tell.
One thing is protuberant per their records; ‘King Ry’ as Garcia is affectionately called, is a vicious KO artist. On the other hand, his opponent ‘Game Boy’ Tagoe mostly prefers to win over the distance.
The bout will be staged by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.
Your guess is as good as mine!
