Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer has already made history as Africa’s first ever female boxer to win an Olympic medal. Now she wants that medal to be gold which will be a remarkable feat in her turbulent participation at the Paris Olympics.
Khelif has weathered a stormy gender debate to punch her way to the finals, and insiders say the Algerian federation are not amused at how the international Boxing Association (IBA) handled their boxer from last year when she was disqualified for failing the eligibility criteria in the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, India.
The Technical Director of the Algerian federation, Mourad Meziane has yet to respond to a query on them joining World Boxing.
IBA’s Secretary-General and CEO Chris Roberts has also not responded on reports of Algeria quitting IBA.
Nigeria are so far the only African country that has left IBA to join World Boxing.
