CECAFA kick off CAF Women’s Champions League 2024 zonal qualifiers in Ethiopia

CECAFA have kicked off the CAF Women’s Champions League 2024 zonal qualifiers in Addis Ababa’s Abebe Bikila Stadium in Ethiopia to determine the East African team to qualify for the finals later this year.

The CECAFA qualifiers will run until 29 August 2024.

Among the eight participating teams are Simba Queens of Tanzania, who emerged victorious in the 2022 CECAFA qualifiers and are now eyeing another strong performance to advance in this significant final tournament.

Simba Queens participated in the 2022 edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League in Morocco where they reached the knockout stage before losing to South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in the semifinals.

Three different clubs have qualified for the finals of the CAF Women’s Champions League from the CECAFA Region including Kenya’s Vihiga Queens (2021) and Tanzania’s JKT Queens (2023).

  • FAD Djibouti (Djibouti)
  • Rayon Sport (Rwanda)

Tournament structure:

The eight participating teams are divided into two groups. A win earns three points, a draw one point, and a loss none.

Based on accumulated points, the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.

The winners of the semi-finals will face off for the title, with the victorious team qualifying for the final stages of the competition.
