Ghana to name Black Bombers squad for 2022 Commonwealth Games this week

The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) is expected to announce its final list of nine athletes for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this week.

United States (US)-based Ornella Sathoud is the only female boxer to be named in the list with eight male set to represent Ghana from July 28 to August 8.

The Graphic Sports can reveal that Olympian Shakul Samed will compete at the light heavyweight class with known faces Abdul Wahid Omar and Jessie Lartey set to feature at the light-welterweight and the light-middleweight classes, respectively.

Abubakar Quartey (middleweight), Alfred Kotey (welterweight), Joseph Commey (featherweight) and Abraham Mensah (bantamweight) have all be confirmed by Graphic Sports sources as part of the final list to be named by trainer of the Black Bombers, Kwasi Ofori Asare.

However, a source close to the team has said there is a friction between trainer Asare and President of the GBF, Bernard Quartey, over whom to choose between Theophilus Allotey and Yaw Addo for the flyweight category.

While Coach Asare prefers Allotey, the GBF President wants Addo to represent Ghana instead, and expresses the belief that the latter’s experience at the games would earn the nation a medal.

“I can tell you that this is the only thing holding the final list but I expect it to be out as soon as possible,” the source noted.

“Theophilus Allotey has been in tremendous shape since the commencement of training camp and won gold at the individual national championship and that is why coach Asare wants to reward him,” the source said.

It is, however, unclear who will be chosen by the amateur body after a scheduled meeting between Coach Asare and President Quartey this week.
