Ghanaian teenage striker Jerry Afriyie has made clear his ambition to establish himself in European football, despite being contracted to Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah.
The 18-year-old, who began his football journey with Ghanaian Division Two side Thoughts FC, made headlines after earning a move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al Qadsiah. However, he was quickly loaned to Spanish third-tier side CD Lugo, where he made a strong impression, scoring four goals in ten appearances.
Speaking about his career trajectory, Afriyie clarified that the move to Saudi Arabia was part of a broader developmental strategy designed to position young talents for opportunities in Europe.
“Some people might misunderstand the situation,” Afriyie explained. “But I didn’t sign with Al Qadsiah because I wanted to play in Saudi Arabia. It’s part of a project—they recruit young players and give them exposure in Europe. Most of us don’t actually play in Saudi Arabia.”
The young striker made it clear where his ambitions lie: “I’m not planning to play in Saudi. I want to play in Europe, leagues like Ligue 1 and others. That’s what I’m aiming for.”
Afriyie’s rising profile received another boost when he earned his first senior call-up to the Ghana national team. He marked the occasion by scoring on his debut during a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium. Although Ghana lost the match 2-1, Afriyie’s equaliser was a personal milestone he will never forget.
“That day, I couldn’t sleep, I was so happy,” he said, reflecting on the emotional moment. “Coming into the senior team and scoring on your debut is not easy. It was overwhelming, but I was very happy.”
Afriyie had previously featured for Ghana at the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, showcasing his potential with impressive performances.
With European football firmly in his sights and a national team debut goal already to his name, Jerry Afriyie is a name to watch as one of Ghana’s most exciting young talents aiming to make a mark on the global stage.
