Ex-NBA player Lazar Hayward arrested after submitting fake COVID-19 documents in Hawaii

Former NBA player Lazar Hayward was one of two people arrested in Hawaii earlier this week for uploading fake COVID-19 test results into the state’s Safe Travels portal, according to Hawaii News Now.

Hayward, 34, and Raven Randle, 33, flew into Kauai from Los Angeles on Tuesday. Per the report, the two then uploaded false negative coronavirus test documents in an effort to avoid a mandatory quarantine on the island.

Police later arrested the two and charged them for unsworn falsification after the documents were flagged, per Hawaii News Now. The two were released from custody and taken back to the airport, where they were put on a flight back to Los Angeles.

Per Hawaii law, fully vaccinated passengers entering the islands from the United States may bypass quarantine after uploading vaccination records into the state’s system. Unvaccinated passengers must show a negative test taken within 72 hours of arrival. Without a negative test or proof of vaccination, a 10-day quarantine is required.

Hayward spent three seasons in the NBA from 2010-2013. He was selected with the No. 30 overall pick in the 2010 draft out of Marquette by the Washington Wizards, but was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves instantly. He was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder the following season, and then bounced back and forth from the G League. Hayward then spent time with the Houston Rockets and back with the Minnesota Timberwolves briefly in 2013. He was waived in January that season, and hasn’t played since.

In total, Hayward averaged 2.9 points and 1.3 rebounds in 72 games throughout his NBA career.
