ADDIS ABABA, March 15, 2022 – Africa’s most successful team of the World Athletics Indoor Championships, Team Ethiopia, arrived in Belgrade, Serbia, for the 2022 championships with the hope of achieving another great success.

The Ethiopian Athletics team consists of some of the most in-form athletes such as the individual event winners of this year’s World Indoor Tour, Gudaf Tsegaye and Lemecha Girma. Defending champion in the 1500 metres, Samuel Tefera, and silver medalist in the 3000 metres, Selemon Barega, are also part of Ethiopia’s strong contingent of 14 athletes.

Team Ethiopia had been preparing for the last four months in Addis Ababa, with the aim of emulating their 2018 Indoor Championships success, where Ethiopia claimed four gold and one silver medals and finished just behind the United States in the final medal table.

“We have done our preparations very well. We all are in our best shapes and our coaches are working very hard to bring the best out of this team. We are going to Belgrade to get good results,” said Berihu Aregawi, the 2021 Diamond League winner in the 5000m.

With 27 gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze medals, Ethiopia sit third, behind the United States and the Russian Federation in the overall medal table of the championships after 16 outings.
