Team Ghana’s boxing campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow opened on a bitter note as veteran boxer Abdul Wahid Omar suffered a comprehensive 0–5 defeat against England’s Patris Mughalzai in the men’s 65kg Round of 32.
The unanimous decision loss brings an early and unexpected end to Omar’s tournament, cutting short his campaign on the opening day of competition.
Steping into Hall 5 at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) as the first of ten Ghanaian boxers set to represent the nation, the 32-year-old experienced pugilist struggled to find his rhythm against his younger, rangier opponent.
The 24-year-old Mughalzai used his reach and sharp counter-punching to control all three rounds, earning a clean sweep on all five judges’ scorecards.
The early elimination represents a major blow to Team Ghana’s podium ambitions in Glasgow. A two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medalist — having reached the semifinals at both Glasgow 2014 and Birmingham 2022 — Omar entered the bout as one of the Black Bombers’ most seasoned international competitors.
With the former medalist now out of contention, attention within the Ghanaian camp turns to teammate Amadu Mohammed, the Accra 2023 Africa Games gold medalist, who begins his campaign in the men’s 55kg (bantamweight) round of 16, alongside the remaining members of the boxing contingent aiming to restore momentum in the ring.
