It is ironical the GFA depend on Sports Ministry – Nii Lantey
Minister designate for Youth and Sports Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuije has expressed that it is ironical for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to depend on the Ministry for financial support despite the huge sponsorship packages it gets.
The Black Stars enjoy sponsorship deals with GNPC, Puma, Unibank, Rice Masters and Cheki Ghana.
And the former Deputy Local Government Minister believes the football governing body must be able to secure additional sponsorships deals to manage the various national teams.
“It is an irony for me that people who are able to attract the necessary sponsorship and funding will still take a major chunk of the budget that is meant for the whole ministry and the other sports disciplines.
Honourable Vanderpuije also added that the FA should be self-sufficient so that the Ministry can wean them off the little budget government presents to them.
“I think that we should be able to look at the possibility of making the GFA self-sufficient so that we can wean them off the budget so that we can have the little that we can have for the other disciplines which are equally important to us.
“Possibly they are the only sporting association that has that huge amount of support, sponsorship and the rest. Together with them, we should be able to look for more sponsors to add up to what they are getting so that wean them off the ministry’s allocation.”
Hon. Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuije will 8th sports minister in only the NDC era and the 15th in the last 15 years.
