New AFBC chief heads to Nigeria on first assignment, to restore unity, resolve IBA-WB impasse

Berhanu Eyassu Wossen, newly elected president of the Africa Boxing Confederation (AFBC) has in a historic move, embarked on his first official visit to Abuja, Nigeria, on Wednesday 22 November, 2023, marking the beginning of a promising era of diplomatic relations to bring Nigeria Boxing Federation back to IBA.

The purpose of this significant visit is to strengthen ties and facilitate negotiations with a committee comprising prominent individuals from various African nations.

Heading this esteemed committee are two distinguished individuals:

1. Awil Gèle Ahmed – Somalia Boxing Federation: Mr. Ahmed brings a wealth of experience and diplomacy to the negotiation table. His leadership in the Somalia Boxing Federation has been marked by inclusivity and a commitment to forging international partnerships.

2. Mr. Siyabulela Cecil Mkwalo – South African National Boxing Organisation: Mr. Mkwalo, a respected figure in the South African sports community, has a track record of successful negotiations and bridge-building. His expertise in boxing and diplomacy is expected to play a pivotal role in the upcoming talks.

The visit to Abuja holds great promise for fostering collaboration and mutual understanding among these nations. It is anticipated that discussions will not only focus on sports diplomacy but also encompass broader areas of cooperation, including trade, culture, and education.
