Vasiliy Lomachenko “likely” to face Richard Commey on December 11th at Madison Square Garden

Earlier this week, Bob Arum revealed that former unified lightweight champion Vasiliy Lomachenko was a “good bet” to headline Top Rank’s annual Heisman Trophy Weekend event on December 11th. Now, Dan Rafael reports that Lomachenko will “likely” face former IBF champ Richard Commey.

This isn’t the first time this matchup has cropped up. The pair were all set to fight in early 2019, when Lomachenko (15-2, 11 KO) held the WBA and WBO belts and Commey (30-3, 27 KO) had just finished smashing Isa Chaniev for the vacant IBF title. Unfortunately, Commey injured his hand while launching it into Chaniev’s face, leaving Lomachenko to demolish Anthony Crolla while “RC” recovered. Commey went on to fight Teofimo Lopez and, well, the rest is history.

Even without hardware at stake, this is still a quality matchup. Both Lomachenko and Commey have proven that they aren’t done after their respective losses to Lopez, Lomachenko with a thorough mauling of Masayoshi Nakatani and Commey with a beatdown of Jackson Marinez. These are two of the best lightweights in the game and it’s a great style clash to boot.

Plus, there’s a decent chance that the winner gets next crack at the undisputed* title if and when they ever manage to stage Lopez’s fight with George Kambosos Jr.
