Basketball League (ABL) Director Alex Kukula has stated the restrictions on player movement ahead of the start of the 2022 Accra Basketball League (ABL) aren’t targeted at the Tema Basketball League.
this when responding to a question on the subject at the Media Launch of the 2022 ABL Season held earlier today at the De’lish Restaurant. The new ABL season commences on Tuesday, March 8 and all games will be played at the Prisons Court in Cantonments.
Addressing the subject, Director Kukula stated:
“No it (rule on player movement restriction) wasn’t targeted at Tema League. Not playing across constituents is a FIBA statute; it’s not the making of ABL. It’s is in the statutes that when you are in a federation you can’t play in two constituencies at the same time. Now the players are being licensed so you can’t have two licenses in one league so you can’t go and play in Kumasi and come and play in the Accra League. From this year on wards that thing is gone”
He further explained the rationale behind the ABL’s move is to ensure players from the Greater Accra Region don’t dominate other regional leagues and teams.
“To grow the other leagues, we need to let the players stay there knowing that when the time comes they will come and represent their region” he added.
The Tema League has operated in the Greater Accra region as the ABL for four seasons and a handful of personalities connected to the league reportedly are unhappy about the ABL’s move.
