GWBF/IWBF to organise Western Zone qualifiers for Africa Para Games – ACCRA 2023

The Ghana Wheelchair Basketball Federation (GWBF) and International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) is set to host the western zone qualifiers in Accra.

Come August 2023, Ghana will host the rest of Africa in the Africa Para Games in Accra dubbed ‘Accra 2023 Africa Para Games.’

Amongst the para sporting disciplines that will be honoured include wheelchair basketball.

The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Africa, which is divided into 5 zones in Africa, decided toorganise qualifiers for these zonal countries.

These zones were:

1. Southern
2. Northern
3. Central
4. Eastern
5. Western

All these zones have organised their qualifications and it is the turn of the Western zone, which will be hosted in Ghana from 12-14 May, 2023.

The Southern zone which comprises countries like Angola, Zambia and South Africa was staged on 7-9 April and it was won by South Africa.

The Central zone qualifiers was organized in Kinshasa from 21-23 April. The countries that participated were Cameroon, C.A.R and Zambia. Zambia won the tournament to represent the central zone.

The Eastern tournament was organized on 5th – 6th May, which saw Kenya facing Tanzania.

The Northern Zone also saw Morocco being joined by Algeria, Egypt.

The Western Zone will be hosted in Ghana. Ghana will be joined by Nigeria, Gambia and Senegal, which used to be with the Eastern Zone.

All is set for Ghana to play host to these countries for the Western zone qualifiers. These events will take place at the Porch Eden Height sports center at Weija, behind the West Hills mall.

The event is a santioned international Wheelchair Basketball program that will lead to the qualification to the Accra 2023 Africa Para Games.

In all, a total of more than 64 players are expected to participate and be classified in these qualifiers. Nigeria and Senegal will be parading both men and women team while Gambia and Senegal will be parading only men’s team.

The Ghana Wheelchair Basketball Federation will benefit in technical training of its officials and athletes classification among others, including the test of playgrounds from the International WheelchairBasketball Federation.

Though GWBF has already qualified for the Accra 2023 Africa Para Games as a host country, it will take advantage to play in the event in order to test the athletes’ performance before the Games.

The executives of the Ghana Wheelchair Basketball Federation led by the President Mr. Emmanuel Domfeh and the Head of Technical, and members of IWBF Technical director Mr. Iddiris Gamel Ayambire have committed to the success of these events and have appealed to cooperate companies to partner with the Ghana Wheelchair Basketball Federation in developing the sport through sponsorship.

A 5-member Local Organising Committee (LOC) was formed to champion the success of this event. The LOC members include Shaaban Mohammed as Chairman, Mr. Jones Mfodwo (Secretary), Richard Amano (PRO) and
Elvis Alupui, Mr Iddi as well as Alex Tetteh, all members of GWBF.
