Erica Sedro tops women’s field of 2023 National Cycling Championship

Erica Sedro of Team Sky placed first to win the gold medal in the Female Elite of the 2023 National Cycling Championship which pedalled off to a resounding success in Ho, capital of Volta Region over the weekend.

The two-day event organised by the Ghana Cycling Federation was lighted by Ghana’s female cyclists on the road race competing for honours to the delight of spectators.

In the end, enterprising Sedro overpowered her counterparts for top spot, Ghana jersey and gold medal via a distance of 65.2km. During 4 laps of racing, she averaged a speed of 23.48km in a finishing time of twenty-three minutes.

She was followed by Florence Heridoh with a finished time of thirty-five minute to carry home mouthwatering prize package as well.

The race on the main streets of Ho attracted massive attention from cycling lovers who thronged the route to enjoy the road event.

The National Championship is part of preparations towards the upcoming Accra 2023 Africa Games to be staged in Ghana next March as well as Paris 2024 Olympic Games in France.

Erica Sedro successfully defended her crown as Ghana’s female cycling champ

Erica Sedro expressed excitement after successfully defending her title.

“I’m very happy for winning this championship again and most importantly I want to thank Ghana Cycling Federation for giving me the opportunity to exhibit my talents,” she told journalists.

“I’m also grateful to my club owner, my coach, referees and all my team members of the Team Sky Cycling Club,” Sedro reiteratwd.

“I am appealing to the federation to continue organising the races so that we can have more women in the competition just like our men’s counterparts,” she added.

Shaaban Mohammed, Secretary General of GCF said their priorities are to have more women competing as Ghana prepares for the Africa Games.

“I want to encourage more women to use cycling as their profession. I will support all female cyclists to attain their dreams of becoming champions. We want to win lots of medals for Ghana,” Mr. Mohammed said.
