Aston Villa U19 coach George Boateng named Ghana assistant coach

Former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough midfielder George Boateng has been named as Ghana’s assistant coach.

The 46-year-old has been named as one of the two deputies for newly-appointed head coach Otto Addo.

A statement from the Ghana FA on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of the former Netherlands star.

“Other members of the new Technical team include George Boateng and Mas-Ud Didi Dramani. The 63- year old will provide Technical advice to the three man team for next month’s FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 play-off match against Nigeria.” part of a statement read.

The Aston Villa youth team coach has long been linked with the role which became vacant following the sacking of Serbian Milovan Rajevac in the wake of the country’s disastrous outing at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Boateng, a former Netherlands international, will assist Otto Addo who has been appointed as head coach and leader of the technical team.

Boateng shares his position with former Asante Kotoko gaffer Mas-Ud Didi Dramani who has also been appointed assistant coach.

Former Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton completes the technical team after being named technical advisor.

Black Stars will take on the Super Eagles at the Cape Coast stadium on March 24 before travelling to Nigeria for the 2nd leg at the Abuja Sports stadium on Sunday, March 27, 2022.

Ghanasoccernet.com understands that Boateng was eyeing the top position when it became vacant last month after Milovan Rajevac was fired after Ghana crashed out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations at the group stage.

However, he has accepted this role and will help to ensure that the Black Stars make it to the global showpiece later this year in Qatar.

Ghana endured a disastrous Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon, after getting eliminated from the group stage.

For the first time in the country’s history, the Black Stars failed to win a game at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, the team will be hoping to bounce back with the FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifiers play-offs slated for March this year.

Four-time champions Ghana were eliminated in the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-2 loss to tournament debutants Comoros, in a shocker that outweighed a string of surprises in Cameroon.

The team will immediately start preparations ahead of the crucial game against Nigeria in the pay-offs of the World Cup qualifiers.

Ghana performed poorly at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, forcing the sack of Milovan Rajevac.

The Black Stars are hoping to make a return to the mundial after missing the 2018 edition in Russia.
