The World Championships in Washington Spokane brought excitement to the camp of Ghana Badminton, as the country secured ten scholarships for its athletes- getting dual careers in education and athlete lifestyle.
The Badminton World Federation, in partnership with the World Academy of Sport (WAoS), awarded the ten slots of Educational Scholarship programme for young dual-career athletes– who have chosen a joint educational and elite sporting life.
The University Educational scholarship programme will allow these young athletes to learn new skills that can help them improve their career opportunities and communities.
“From this point on, in everything you do, you will be talked about because you are out in front, and this university scholarship is a great opportunity for you to make Ghana proud,” said Dealwoe Nyanyo, Team Manager and Treasurer for the Ghana Badminton Association.
“You are setting the pace and the footprint that others will follow. As I told you, players, education is a ticket on the bus. No one will tell you what to do with life because you have this scholarship ticket that enables you to do what you want, but the scholarship ticket comes with responsibility,”
The Athlete Certificate combines fun and creative online sessions to educate athletes to become successful and knowledgeable in their sporting careers.
The online course is open to young athletes between 15 and 18 years old and will be completed within three months.
On completion, they will also be eligible for a post-graduate certificate in International Sports Management from the University of London – enabling Ghanaian athletes to have a joint educational, elite sporting life and emerging sports technologies.
The World Championships had over 48 countries in the United States fighting for honours, scholarships, and key ranking points. Ghana registered gains that can only inspire a more significant achievement sooner than later.
The young players, some of who travelled outside the country for the first time, impressed even officials of their opponents, drawing commendations for having a great future ahead towards the 2023 African Games, 2024 Paris Olympics, 2026 Youth Olympics, and other international open and invitational events.
Ghana also became the first African country to reach the finals of Mix Team Group in 23 years, having lost to Norway in the finals.
