Cape Verde outclass Mozambique 3-0 to win group B with a game to spare

Cape Verde continued to dazzle in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), extending their triumphant journey with a convincing 3-0 victory over Mozambique on Friday at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan. This win solidifies their position in the tournament’s Round of 16.

The Blue Sharks, having already surprised everyone with a 2-1 triumph over Ghana in their initial match, seized the lead in the 32nd minute when Bedé unleashed a right-footed shot from beyond the area following a free kick.

Their dominance persisted, with Ryan Mendes adding to the tally in the 51st minute, directing a right-footed shot from the center of the box into the bottom left-hand corner. Kevin Pina further asserted Cape Verde’s superiority with a third goal, firing a shot from outside the penalty area into the bottom left-hand corner.

Mozambique initially resisted, but the relentless pressure applied by the Cape Verdeans ultimately overwhelmed them. Bedé’s early goal served as a pivotal moment, boosting the Blue Sharks’ confidence and paving the way for their comfortable triumph.

This stellar performance has instilled hope within the Cape Verde camp, fostering aspirations for an extended run in the tournament. Having shocked tournament favorite Ghana in their opener and now convincingly dispatching Mozambique, the Blue Sharks have remarkably emerged as a team to be reckoned with in the ongoing continental spectacle.

As the tournament progresses, the upcoming matches promise heightened excitement and unpredictable outcomes. With numerous talented teams vying for glory, the 2024 AFCON is poised to deliver a captivating spectacle for football enthusiasts across Africa and beyond.

Meanwhile, as Cape Verde gears up for the Round of 16 clash against the third-placed team from Group C, observers and fans of African football are left to wonder if this composed and impressive Cape Verdean team possesses the mettle to emulate the Zambians who shocked Africa—and the world—at the 2012 AFCON.
